Hi All,
So I had this class assignment where we had to do a project on a photographer, then we had to pick a few of their images and emulate them. If you don't know what emulate means (which was me for the longest time) it just means to recreate. (someone fancy was trying to sound cool).
Well I did mine on my favorite photographer and personal icon Philippe Halsman. He has done so much and if you gave me the time of day I would tell you everything he has done (EVERYTHING), but what I wanted to focus on and what I wanted to photograph was this shoot he did with almost every person he ever shot called jump.
Have you ever taken a photo of you and your friends jumping? He is the reason, and his most famous picture is one of the one and only Marilyn Monroe jumping in his studio. He said that when a person jumps they release all social chains and allow themselves to be themselves and show themselves. (looked at all the selves!) This is one of the reasons I started photography and a very big reason why I called my company Totally You. I wanted to follow his idea of taking a picture where a person is themselves and isn't worried about what the world thinks.
So I recreated three of his images and lord was it a journey. I first had no idea what the hell I was doing. I am/was new and barely knew how to use a studio strobe (that has changed now!), I had a hard time screwing it on to a light stand (it took me like 20 mins to figure that out). But once we got jumping my model Jenna and I were having a blast. (until I almost fell. . . but i caught myself so HA!)
But in the end I am so happy with the shot and I think I truly emulated Mr. Halsman in the best way. So definitely go check out the collection and see how I am AWESOME! (that kick though)
